You have selected the most important dress you will ever wear whether you have ordered your gown or perhaps you have purchased a ready to wear off the peg wedding dress that just needs a few tweaks to ensure its fits to perfection. Or you wish to have custom changes to a gown you have purchased to create a unique wedding dress. For me its never to early to start thinking about your alteration needs. Many brides chose to leave it to the last minute but for me I always will advise book them in as soon as you have your wedding dress or you scheduled as soon as you have first viewed your ordered gown. During peak periods of the spring and summer quite often our seamstresses diary get exceptionally busy so we recommend always booking your dress in early to avoid disappointment.
WHEN SHOULD I HAVE MY WEDDING DRESS FITTINGS?
In the boutique we like to schedule your first fitting approximately 8 - 10 weeks prior to your wedding day. This allows plenty of time for the alterations to be completed with a second or third fitting to ensure a perfect fit.
During your first fitting the seamstress will pin your chosen dress. You will need your wedding shoes and bra if you're wearing one for all fittings to ensure your dress fits to perfection. During your first fitting the seamstress will complete what we call "The Instructions" which is a full list of everything thats required to finish your dress. You will be required to pay 50% of the cost with the remainder due at your final fitting.
Your second fitting is normally scheduled two to four weeks after your initial appointment to check the alterations work that has been completed and if you need any additional work. You will be advised at your initial appointment on the likely numbers of fittings you will require. Your final fitting is normally completed 1 - 2 weeks prior to your wedding day to ensure you have a dress altered to perfection.
WHAT TYPE OF ALTERATIONS WILL MY DRESS NEED?
Each brides dress requires different alteration work, please be aware that most ordered wedding dresses are made to a particular size and are not made to measure and will most likely need some tweaks to make it fit to perfection. The majority of our brides tend to need their hem shortening, shoulder lift and adjustments to their bust. Many brides like to have a bustle added to their train so it can be hooked up dancing. We also offer to sew bust cups or bra's into gowns for brides who chose not to wear a bra on their day. A wedding dress isn't normal attire or something you shop for regularly and we absolutely advocate making a dress your own and adding custom straps, design changes, additional buttons, custom covers or boleros... the list is endless but its definitely something we can do.
AGH.... WEIGHT CHANGES BETWEEN FITTINGS
This is something we see regularly and its something we get asked the most about. My only advice if try and be the size you want to be at your first fitting as this gives you a date to work to. If you go on to change size, it may just involve an additional fitting. Please do not starve or make yourself ill... If your worried contact us and we will be happy to help. We will make your chosen dress fit you not trying to fit yourself into the dress.
ARE THE ALTERATIONS PRICES INCLUDED IN THE PRICE OF MY DRESS?
The cost of your alterations are not included in the price of your dress we suggest budgeting £175 - £250 for standard alterations. Making custom changes or having custom items made will increase the price accordingly. If your wedding dress is bespoke and made to measure it may sometimes just need tweaking to make it fit to perfection and may be cheaper to alter.
WILL THE SEAMSTRESS SHOW ME HOW TO GET INTO MY DRESS?
Yes Yes Yes, we will show you and your entourage how to get into your wedding dress? If you need any help with lacing your corset back dress the seamstress will of course show you. We also have a video on You Tube to show you how to lace your gown correctly and also a previous blog post
